Blog 02/ Why Handmade Pet Accessories Matter More Than Ever
The Heart, Craft, and Community Behind Every Stitch
If you’ve ever walked through a big-box pet aisle, you know the feeling: rows and rows of identical collars, mass-printed bandanas, and accessories that all look… the same. Convenient, maybe. Cute, sometimes. But personal? Meaningful? Made with love? Not always.
Over the past few years, more pet parents—myself included—have started rethinking what we buy for our pets. There’s been a quiet shift happening. Instead of choosing mass-produced items, people are gravitating toward handmade, small-batch, thoughtfully crafted accessories made by real humans who genuinely love pets.
As a digital marketer, a maker, and someone who spends an embarrassing amount of time sewing with my dogs asleep at my feet, I’ve seen firsthand how handmade items can bring something deeply meaningful to the pet world. Handmade isn’t just a product. It’s a feeling. A connection. A story.
And for me, for Arkisploot, and for the community that has grown around this little handmade brand, it’s become something much bigger than fabric and thread.

1. Better Quality, Made With Care
One thing I’ve learned through years of sewing is that handmade makers care deeply about what leaves their hands. There’s intention behind every cut, every fold, every stitch. We don’t sew to fill a warehouse. We sew to fill hearts.
Each Arkisploot accessory—whether it’s a bandana, bow tie, sailor bow, or tuxedo—is:
Carefully cut and reinforced
Stitched slowly, not rushed
Finished with neat edges
Inspected one by one
No machines scanning thousands of pieces per hour. No conveyor belts. No shortcuts. Just a maker making sure every piece meets the standard I’d expect for my own pets.
Quality for me is personal because my dogs wear everything I make first. If Arki or Sunny can’t zoom around in it without flipping it, pulling it off, or dragging it through the house, it doesn’t get released. That’s the beauty of handmade: you don't just make a product. You live with it. You improve it. You care about how it feels, not just how it sells.

2. Designed for Real Pets, By Someone Who Actually Lives With Pets
Let’s be honest—pets don’t sit still for photos. They wiggle. They sploot. They roll. They run straight through muddy trails five minutes after you put on a fresh bandana.
That’s why handmade makers design differently. We design with real life in mind. As someone with three dogs who all have completely different personalities (and neck fluff levels), I’ve tested every little detail of my products on them. I’ve learned what fabrics stay comfortable, what closures are safe, what shapes sit nicely on the chest, and what designs stay upright even during the zoomiest zoomies.
This practical, hands-on experience is something a factory simply can’t replicate. Handmade makers understand because we live it.

3. A Journey of Constant Improvement: My Bow Design Evolution
One of my favorite parts of handmade work is how much your designs evolve over time. You learn. You observe. You adjust. And the final product becomes stronger, smarter, and more thoughtful than before.
My pet bows went through this exact journey.

It started with elastic.
In the early days, I made my bows with a simple elastic band at the back. It was easy to slide onto collars, and for some dogs, it worked perfectly. But elastic, as I quickly learned, has a mind of its own. After a few wears, it stretched, sagged, or shifted around the collar. Some dogs would come back from a zoomie session with the bow sitting under their chin.
Not ideal.
So I switched to one Velcro strap.
This was a huge step up. One Velcro strap made the bow easier to secure and way more stable. Dogs could run, nap, eat, or do their usual daily chaos without the bow completely flipping upside down.
But after seeing hundreds of dogs at markets—and how differently every collar fits—I realized even one Velcro strap wasn’t enough for all dogs.
Some collars were extra thick. Some were too thin. Some dogs were too active. Some pulled on the leash in ways that twisted the bow.
Then came the biggest upgrade: dual-Velcro straps.
Now, every Arkisploot bow is made with two reinforced Velcro straps at the back.
That decision changed everything:
-
The bow stays centered
-
It doesn’t slide to the side
-
It doesn’t twist during play
-
It’s secure on standard 1-inch collars
-
It’s still easy for pet parents to attach
And because every dog is different (especially big fluffy doodles or chunky collars), I now include extended Velcro pieces when someone needs them. No extra charge. Just a small way of making sure every pet gets the perfect fit.
This design evolution wasn’t just a product decision—it was the result of years of sewing, testing, customer feedback, and watching my own dogs live in the products I make.
That’s the power of handmade.
You don’t just design.
You improve.
You listen.
You grow.
4. Unique Designs That Reflect Your Pet’s Personality
One of the reasons handmade pet accessories are so loved is because they celebrate individuality. Handmade shops don’t produce thousands of identical designs. We make small batches, limited editions, seasonal collections, and custom orders that truly reflect your pet’s personality.
Whether your dog is a bow-tie gentleman, a sailor-bow princess, or a tassel bandana-loving adventurer, there’s something special about dressing them in something that feels uniquely them.
Handmade pieces are expressive.
They’re thoughtful.
And they help your pet stand out in the sweetest way.

5. Supporting Real People, Not Corporations
Behind every handmade accessory is a real person—someone juggling creativity, pets, a sewing machine, and a dream. Buying handmade means supporting someone who pours their heart into their craft.
When someone purchases from Arkisploot, I feel it. It means something. It helps me buy more fabric, upgrade tools, attend more markets, and keep creating pieces that bring joy to dogs and dog parents.
It stays in the community. It supports a local maker. It fuels a passion—not a corporation.

6. Handmade Builds a Genuine Pet-Loving Community
One thing I value the most about Arkisploot is the community that has grown around it. Every customer who shares a photo, every dog I meet at a market, every story shared about a pet—these moments fill my heart more than anything else.
I don’t just sell accessories.
I build relationships.
I celebrate pets.
I share in people’s joy.
And because of that, my customers don’t feel like strangers—they feel like part of the Arki Family.

7. Handmade Is a More Ethical, Sustainable Choice
Handmade shops often operate on a “slow made” philosophy. We use materials mindfully, avoid unnecessary waste, and create products meant to last.
A single high-quality handmade bandana that lasts for years is far more sustainable than disposable accessories that fall apart after a few wears.
Choosing handmade means choosing durability, thoughtfulness, and a smaller environmental footprint.
Final Thoughts: More Than an Accessory, It’s a Connection
Handmade pet accessories aren’t just things your pet wears. They’re little pieces of love. They carry intention, care, personality, and the story of the maker who crafted them.
Every stitch has meaning.
Every design has a reason.
Every purchase supports a dream, a family, and a community of pet lovers.
When you see your pet proudly wearing a handmade bow or bandana, you’ll understand—
it just feels different.
It means something.
